Welcome to the 2008-2009 Rotary Year!

Communication issues are the nemesis of great plans.
In honor of your good plans and mine, I will send out monthly newsbriefs on literacy news, options, and recording expectations from District 6900 and from Rotary International.

I appreciate all you do for Rotary, and I know time as well as up-to-date information are essential in your work to
make dreams real through literacy.

Literacy Information Meetings

First, let me correct an error in the directory: Literacy Month is in March, not July. That means we have ample time to plan our wonderful works for that special literacy month; however, it does not diminish the immediate need to know what Rotary International's Literacy Resource Group has established as goals for the literacy work of Rotary in 2008-09.  RILRG meets each May in Evanston, IL, to chart a direction for literacy activities in the coming Rotary year. That information is important, and in order to best equip each club for a successful literacy year, I am scheduling literacy information meetings in several locations so that every club in our district will have one of the meetings within comfortable reach. Attending one of the meetings is important for club literacy chairs, Presidents, and Assistant Governors, as there are changes in literacy expectations that will definitely impact your clubs.

Refreshments will be served, connections will be made, and ideas will be shared - tossed lightly with a bit of fun.

District 6900 is making dreams real in literacy!

Several rotary clubs and two Interact Clubs in District 6900 are implementing a literacy program in their community that was first pioneered in 2006 by the Rotary Club of Peachtree City - Souns for literacy.  In 2007-08 Souns was introduced district-wide with the support of PDG Bill Woulfin.

The program has received a District Simplified Grant, was invited to exhibit at Rotary's International Assembly in San Diego, and was a Rotary literacy project at this year's International convention. Souns currently joins several early language programs on the list of options compiled by Rotary International's Literacy Resource Group.

The Rotary Clubs in District 6900 offering the Souns for literacy program to date are: Alpharetta, Coweta-Fayette, Dunwoody Sunset, Henry County, Lake Spivey, North DeKalb, and Peachtree City. Interact Clubs that are introducing the Souns program for infants and toddlers or family literacy opportunities are Counterpane Montessori School and Marietta High School. Community libraries that offer infant/toddler programs are great opportunities for the Souns program; however, there are many other applications.
